But 18th century English Judge Sir Francis Buller purportedly said "a husband could thrash his wife with impunity provided that he used a stick no bigger than his thumb." In 1782, political satirist James Gillray caricatured Buller as “Judge Thumb,” selling “Patent sticks for family correction” as a man beats a woman in the background.
